Just a Personal Note From the Author

*This was my post from last week with a few additions. Life has been crazy…. u know how that goes! :)

If you’ve read any of my recent articles then you’ve probably seen my promises to post personal updates  here on Cosmetics By Cortney. I don’t usually like to make my life the main focus of my  beauty blog, but a post here and there couldn’t hurt. This might end up being a little long winded, so feel free to skip it if you wish- no offense taken! :)

I wanted to start off by thanking each and every one of you that stops by my blog. Whether you’ve been here once and read one review  or you stop by every day to check and see what’s new. I honestly appreciate all of you.

Right now i’m going through a lot of transitions and working to balance life and work. The same thing I imagine everyone else is trying to do. I had a fantastic Thanksgiving, more than I could have hoped for. One of my sisters flew here to visit and we had a great time catching up. Like most people we cooked (and consumed) way too much food. Good times as always. I hope you all had as great of a Thanksgiving as I did.

I was unfortunate enough to catch the flu this last Thursday, which was a major bummer. I had to miss work on Friday and I could barely walk on my own until Saturday due to my body aches. The sore throat and headaches were total torture and i’m still not completely over it! This was a good lesson for me though. I’m always running around trying to carry more than I should hold. This makeup-free weekend of relaxing and just trying to feel better has given me plenty of time to reflect on things. I’ve really gotta make more time for myself. I’m always telling everyone else to do it and I do TRY, but I seem to get side tracked somehow. Even the little things I used to do for myself have fallen to the wayside lately. Any tips are much appreciated on this matter!

On a brighter note, i’ ve been catching up on old episodes of one of my all-time-favorite t.v. shows: Frasier. I know this humor isn’t for everyone, but I find it hilarious! It never fails to make me smile. I’m smiling just thinking about it. Haha

The weather has been grey and cast over here in L.A. I couldn’t be happier! I have that reverse weather thing where i’ m cranky and unhappy on sunny days. Bummer for someone who lives in Los Angeles!

I guess that about raps up my update. If you want to see more of these, please comment or message me and let me know. XOXO

Everyone Can Wear Red Lipstick- Even You!

I’m not sure when this mix-up started about red lipstick being “too bold” or only for blondes named Marilyn, but it’s time to set the record straight.

I hear from my subscribers and readers all the time about how they wish they could pull off wearing red lipstick. Most girls say they don’t think they have the right look, or it’s just too strong of a statement for them. Well the vote is in! Anyone can wear red lipstick. It doesn’t matter if you’re short or tall, a redhead or a blonde- you can sizzle in red too.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I can understand feeling uncomfortable with so much color on your face at first- especially if you typically don’t wear any. But it just takes some getting used to. I would say that 85-95% of the days I wear red lipstick, I get a compliment :) day or night.

Here are some tips to help you get used to wearing red lipstick:

  • Try wearing it around the house to start, and every time you go to use the restroom, take a peek in the mirror. This will get you used to seeing it on your lips.
  • When you go out  for the first time wearing your sexy red lipstick of choice, try convincing a friend to wear it with you. Or better yet, if you already have friend that regularly flaunts some sexy red- go out with her. It will make you feel like part of a club :)
  • If you feel like you need to start a little slower, practice with a very sheer pink lipstick or gloss on your lips first. Then you can gradually go to more vibrant shades of pink until you make your way to red. This will help decrease the color shock value you might be feeling.

Remember ladies, beauty is about who you are and what you like. Good luck on your quest to wear red!

Urban Decay Primer Potion Review

There’s quite a bit to be said about this little tube of wonder. Rightfully labeled a “potion”, i’ve been using this for years now. If you have oily eyelids or tend to have your eyeshadow do a disappearing act after an hour or two, then Urban Decay’s Primer Potion is your new best friend. This also presents a solution for anyone who get’s a crease of shadow on their eyelids. You can choose from 4 different shades: Eden, Greed, Original and Sin. I also use these with glitter liner and it works great for me.

These come in the four different shades i’ve listed above and are a velvety texture that easily glides over your eye lids. Typically I have to apply it with my finger tip but that really isn’t much of an inconvenience. A small bottle goes a really long way. Remember to replace your bottle in the recommended time frame, as with all cosmetics.

When they say this lasts for 24+ hours- they really mean it. I’ve used UDPP through long days of School, Work, Nights Out Clubbing, Even when i’ve been exercising! I can’t really say enough good things about this. You can see why it made it into Cortney Loves. Although, I do wish they wouldn’t put so many Parabens (or any at all!) in this.

Thanks to Urban Decay for making this awesome eye shadow primer!
